History of Tukums

Tukums vicinity counties have been in place since the 13th century. This has been Liv and Kursi land since that time. From 1254, the Tukums and area territory was part of the Livonian Order territory and later a holding of the Duke of Kurzeme (Courland in other sources). In 1710, Tukums was ravaged by a plague which took the lives of 2/3 of the residents and it was only at the end of the 18th century when the population again reached 1000. In accordance with pre-war administrative divisions, part of the district was located in Kurzeme (Kandava, Cēre, Zentene Pagasts), and the other part in Zemgale. Tukums District was first created on November 27, 1795 at the bequest of Russian Tsarina Catherine II. At the end of 1949, the borders and administrative bodies as they had been known were dissolved and replaced by kolkhoz territories. Over time, the borders of the district have changed quite a few times.

Tukums Coat of Arms

The coat of arms features a small hill with three green fir trees on a silver background.

Tukums’ Coat of Arms was first approved in 1837 and then again in 1925. It was approved for a third time in 1995 and for a fourth time in 2006.
