In between Vidzemes upland (not only the Gaizins, also the Sirdskalns, Abrienas, Kelenu, The Small Gaizins, Kletskalns and many other hills) and Lubanas low land. Between two climatic zones. In Varaklani and Murmastiene for a long time it is forgotton about a snow, in the forests of Marciena and Laudona it lies in ravines, around the Vestiena and Jumurda it is still possible to ski.

We are one of three districts where along the side of hilly place crosses Riga – Plavinas - Madona - Aluksne railway. Covered with asphalt and sabulous roads ascend and stoop in order to unite provincial towns and parishes, farmsteads, some times to come closer to good-lookers Kāls, Viešūrs, Kaķītis, Gulbēris or tiny lake` s eye. Just around Lazdona there are nearly 30 lakes which area are bigger than 1ha. There are 189 lakes in the district.

Our most characteristic colours are blue, green and white. Blue are waters and clouds over us.  We are district of agriculture where the sprouts of first leaves and fields compete in colouring with fir-trees` and pine trees` tinges. Beside farming milk cattle-breeding is developed, there are famous gardeners and bee-keepers. Unconventional fields develop therefore on the way from Berzaune to Vestiena do not be surprised to notice not only well tended horses but also herd of goats.

Forests cover 46% of district` s territory therefore preparation and processing of timber products is one of the most important forms of business. Other manufacturing enterprises mostly reshape the local farming products – milk and meat.

White clouds, milk, flowers, schools and skirts of folk costumes. We are a region of singers and dancers. Hundreds of our amateurs can be seen in Song festivity in Riga just after the Riga city and district. In summertime every week in different places there take place several open air parties where you also can be a participant.
 
 Do not you like festivity` s crowd? Then look at the castle ruins in Ergli, see the ensemble of Vestiena` s country seat, climb the castle mound of Arona, visit museums. If you are in Ergli inhale the perfume of white roses in “Braki” – since the times of Rudolf Blaumanis it has not changed. In “Meņģeli” explore the family tree of brothers Jurjan or try to weave the striped blanket in a barn. Listen how in “Vecais Ceplis” (“the Old Oven”) sound the vocal of Janis Zaber. When you are in cemetery in Vestiena you should visit the Latvian Armed Forces colonel` s Oskar Kalpak monument and then you should go to “Liepsalas”, there is an unique memorial place.

Our store of knowledge has renewed. In 1990 again started public worships in the largest church in rural area of Latvia – in Cesvaine (1869). The people of Liezere construct on the old basics, completely new catholic churches has been built where they have not ever been – in Ergli, Cesvaine. A symbolic sign of our progress is the cross near the gutted by fire building` s wall in Vestiena, spiritual concerts in Kalsnava.
